Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has condemned the killing of a young man by gunmen at the main gate of University of Benin on Sunday, declaring that Edo State will not serve as a sanctuary for criminals.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the governor described the attack as brazen, cold-blooded and a direct assault on public safety and human dignity.
He said the killing, which occurred in broad daylight on a day regarded as sacred by many, runs contrary to the values of his administration and is completely unacceptable.
Governor Okpebholo extended condolences to the family, friends and associates of the deceased, assuring them that the matter would not be swept aside.
He said the Edo State Police Command has commenced investigation into the incident, while other security agencies are working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The governor assured the public that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
Reaffirming his administration’s determination to stamp out cult-related violence across the state, Governor Okpebholo said deliberate and sustained measures have been put in place since he assumed office to confront the menace.
According to him, the measures include intensified security operations in communities identified as cult flashpoints, leading to the arrest and prosecution of several suspected cultists. He added that the state government is also working closely with the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army to dismantle criminal networks operating in different parts of the state.
He noted that the government has also strengthened community engagement through traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and civil society organisations, while supporting rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for young persons vulnerable to cult recruitment.
Governor Okpebholo said the measures are already producing results, but noted that the latest killing is a reminder that the battle against violent crime is far from over.
“Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent people will face the full consequences of the law,” he said.
He appealed to members of the public with useful information on the incident to contact the Edo State Police Command or any other security agency, assuring that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality.
